u-blox Automotive Dead Reckoning solutions

Situations where GPS signals are blocked are unavoidable, particularly in tunnels and underground parking garages. In these environments, u-blox’ Dead Reckoning solution allows uninterrupted vehicle navigation based on heading and distance data provided by external sensors. From the last known GPS position, a vehicles’ current position can be calculated using information gathered from these sources:
  • External Sensors: Dead Reckoning is accomplished using Gyroscope and Tachometer information
  • Individual Wheel Speed: Dead Reckoning is accomplished using Individual Wheel Speed Information
Dead Reckoning based on extrapolation of vehicle speed and heading

These sensors can be directly connected to the GPS receiver or the sensor readings can be obtained through the vehicle data bus. When GPS satellites are out of sight, GPS location is extrapolated using distance and angle information from the sensors. This results in accurate positioning even when the GPS signal is impaired or absent. Dead Reckoning not only allows full coverage in indoor car parks, tunnels and underpasses but also effectively eliminates the impact of multipath effects in urban canyon environments.

u-blox supports two Dead Reckoning solutions:

For Automotive Tier-1 suppliers

Ideal for first-mount navigation systems because it uses wheel tick information taken directly from the vehicle data bus, u-blox' Automotive Dead Reckoning (ADR) GPS chip (UBX-G6010) and chipset (UBX-G6000/G0010) are the perfect solution for in-car navigation and telematics systems.

Designed specifically for automotive dead reckoning applications, both chip and chipset are AEC-Q100, TS-16949 compliant. u-blox' ADR solution is revolutionary in that it requires no gyroscope or customization and runs entirely on the GPS chip. It is completely self-calibrating, requiring no pre-configuration.

For After-market devices

Using gyroscope and odometer pulses from a tachometer, the u-blox LEA-6R GPS receiver module solution is independent of the vehicle data bus and thus ideal for after-market applications such as portable navigation systems.
